June 2006 Intellexis helps Hilton with it's global developmentThe Hilton group offers a set of 25 finance courses, using e-learning provided by Intellexis. They are part of the Hilton University, which also features around 300 business skills modules, plus 40 other bespoke e-learning courses. All these are open to anyone with access to the university, which means Hilton employees can choose what they want to learn and when. 'Each of the finance options takes between 30 and 90 minutes to complete,' says Andrea Kluit, Hilton's director of international learning and development. 'There are between two and five chapters in each, and once you have completed these, you are tested on your understanding.' In principle, people should have time to do the courses at work, but many choose to do them in their own time. 'We do provide learning zones, though,'Kluit point out. 'These are separate rooms complete with pcs where people can go and study.' She favours e-learning because it's less expensive than organising regular residential courses and because it's accessible to anyone at any time. 'It puts the learner in the driving seat,` she says. 'Before, a manager would choose a course for you. Now you can pick a subject yourself because it's of particular interest to you.' The disadvantage, she admits, is that it requires discipline. Also, the courses are only available in English. Kluit does not imagine e-learning will ever replace face-to-face methods. 'It's popular, but it's not the only way.'
