July 2006 ILX Group joins the Top 50 club
Position: 41ILX Group joins the Top 50 club following two years of rapid expansion fuelled by a string of acquisitions. The original core of the company is Intellexis, an e-learning provider founded in 1988 that focuses on financial and business training. But when Ken Scott took over as chief executive four years ago, he felt that ILX’s offering needed broadening. ‘If we just focus on online and computer-based training then we’ve actually missed the point. Other suppliers do this, they focus on one aspect of delivery, whereas the customer, particularly large organisations, increasingly want delivery that suits their staff and gets the result.’ As well as growing classroom capability, the group moved into new sectors. In March 2004, ILX acquired Key Skills, a leading provider of computer-based training for project management and Prince2. ‘This is a market that you’d think would be dominated by online and CBT, but in fact is dominated by classroom training,’ says Scott. ‘So we’ve got bags of opportunity as organisations increasingly look at how much they’re spending on training.’ This acquisition was followed by the purchase of Mindscope, a project management classroom trainer; Computa-Friendly, an application classroom training business with customers such as the Ministry of Defence and Wiltshire Police Authority; and Mount Lane, a specialist provider of support tools for large desktop migrations which the company claims can introduce new systems at a fraction of the cost of traditional rollout programmes. Currently all these businesses are branded separately as divisions of ILX. ‘It’s better to let them carry on doing what they do best for a period before you start messing with it,’ explains Scott. ‘Too many organisations throw everything up in the air and then you lose out big time for the first year or two because momentum is lost.’ Click Here for the full story.
